Vietnam joins "3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign" for the first time

"3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign" is a global campaign to raise the awareness of people around the world about road traffic safety.
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in collaboration with the Vietnam National Traffic Safety Committee on March 19 launched "3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign" and announced Vietnam’s commitment to implement the United Nations’ traffic accident reduction goals.

With the participation of 3000 people, the campaign conveyed the message of "Safe travelling, saving thousands of lives", encouraging the community to follow the FIA’s 12 golden rules, contributing to raising people’s awareness of obeying road traffic law, thereby repelling traffic accidents and minimizing casualties.

"3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign" is a global campaign to raise the awareness of people around the world about road traffic safety.

Launched in 2017, the campaign is a reminder to everyone that 3,500 people are killed in road accidents every day across the world. The campaign represents part of the FIA's commitment to fulfilling the UN's sustainable goal of halving daily traffic deaths until 2020. The campaign has spread to more than 900 cities in nearly 80 countries and become the largest road safety campaign in history.

In Vietnam, the launching ceremony will be the first official event to implement the campaign's activities with the aim of raising the community’s awareness, especially young people on "life saving principles" when driving. 

The campaign is not only a necessary step to minimize casualties caused by traffic accidents, but also demonstrates the Vietnamese government’s strong commitment in promoting image of a "safe, friendly, civilized" Vietnam to the world. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen The Hung said that in recent years, Hanoi has taken drastic measures and somewhat reduced traffic accidents annually on all three criteria.

However, Hung stressed that traffic order and safety in the city is still complicated, with the occurence of serious traffic accidents. Therefore, in the time ahead, Hanoi will take bolder measures to pull down traffic accidents from 5-10% in all three criteria; ensure absolute traffic safety to serve the important domestic and international political events taking place in the capital, especially the F1 race in 2020, he added.

On this occasion, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The represented the Vietnamese government to give a symbol of Vietnam's commitment to fulfill the UN’s traffic safety targets to the FIA’s President Jean Todt. Then, he received the Union of NGOs’ commitment to support Vietnam on ensuring road safety.
