Le Quang Liem, Ho Chi Minh City-based chess grandmaster has become the new champion of the Asian Chess Championship 2019 held in Hebei, China, VietnamNet reported.
Before entering the last game, Le Quang Liem (Elo 2,694) had gained a significant victory against the 15-year-old rival prodigy Alireza Firouzja (Elo 2,682) from Iran after 39 moves.
In the final game, the Vietnamese number-one top seed with the white pieces confronted the Indian Sethuraman Panayappan (Elo 2,613) with the black ones as the later just need merely 0.5 points to grab the throne.
Although Liem took the upper hand in the game, he still performed with his best effort and vigilance to finally defeat the gifted Indian rival after 38 moves and convincingly won the champion with seven points over nine rounds.
The triumphant result has brought Liem back to the group of International Grand Master which includes the chess masters who accumulated Elo 2700+, as well as US$11,000 in cash prize.
The Asian Chess Championship 2019, which took place from June 7 to 15, saw the absence of a number of formidable chess players including Viswanathan Anand (2,767), Wei Yi (2,738) and Pentala Harikrishna (2,734), among others.
