Between July 2018 and February 2019, criminal investigations were launched against 12 officials in Ha Giang, Son La and Hoa Binh provinces for falsifying exam results.
Vietnam is determined to deal with education-related issues that angered public opinion, Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha emphasized at a teleconference on August 6.

Minister Nha said that the education sector continues to implement nine major task groups and five groups of basic solutions to effectively implement the Vietnamese government’s decision on education and training.

Besides the advantages, the sector also faces many difficulties and challenges, many of which have existed for a long time and angered public opinion but have not been solved thoroughly, the minister added.

Especially, between July 2018 and February 2019, criminal investigations were launched against 12 officials in Ha Giang, Son La and Hoa Binh provinces for falsifying exam results.

Nha said that his ministry has identified the extent of infractions of organizations and individuals and handled wrongdoers in line with law. Strict punishments will deter officials from getting involved in exam cheating in the years ahead, the minister stressed.

Hanoi achieved comprehensive educational results

At the conference, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Ngo Van Quy mentioned a number of results which the city’s education sector achieved in implementing nine major task groups and five groups of basic solutions set by the Ministry of Education and Training in the academic year of 2018-2019.

Accordingly, Hanoi has built 70 new schools and repaired 387 others at a cost of over VND5,000 billion (US$215 million). Besides, the city focused on building schools of national standards, part of efforts to improve the city’s education quality, Quy said.

"Hanoi students’ achievements in national and international exams are proofs of improved educational quality. The city continues to be one of the leading localities in the country with 197 national and international medals,” Quy stressed.

He also pointed out some limitations of the capital’s education and training sector, such as excessive school-fee collection, illegal extra classes, school violence, classroom and school shortages in urban areas, among others.

On that basis, Hanoi proposed the relevant units to soon promulgate guidelines for localities to implement the general school planning under the new law, formulate a mechanism for coordinating and implementing the vocational training and issue a document on autonomy of education and training establishments, Quy concluded.
