Vietnam and UNESCO cooperate closely in various fields

A ceremony to mark the 70th founding anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi on November 23.
Attending the event were Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh; Permanent Deputy Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang; Deputy Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Le Hong Son, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Mechthid Roessler and Representative of the UNESCO in Vietnam Katherine Muller -Marin.

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Pham Binh Minh stressed that the UNESCO is one of the largest professional organizations of the United Nations and is honoured as the World Intellectual organization.
Since 1976, Vietnam was honoured to become a member of the UNESCO. The organization worked closely with Vietnam through its network and organization until the establishment of representative offices in Vietnam (since September 1999).
In the field of education, one of the major programs being implemented in Vietnam was "The decade of education for sustainable development in the 2005-2014 period".

The cultural cooperation between Vietnam and the UNESCO have contributed positively on the national development. The achievements in cooperation with UNESCO has contributed to enhance Vietnam's position in the international arena.
At the event, Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh congratulated the UNESCO's achievements in the past 70 years, and confirming that Vietnam is willing to cooperate with the organisation and perfect the full membership of the UNESCO.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Le Hong Son said that the capital of Hanoi has been honoured by UNESCO in many fields such as: City of Peace, Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giong festival Phu Dong district and the Soc Temple being the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Vice Chairman Son expressed his wishes to continue receiving the UNESCO's support in the preserving and promoting the cultural heritage values of Hanoi, especially for intangible heritages.
Making the speech at the event, Representative of the UNESCO in Vietnam Katherine Muller -Marin said: "To the people of Vietnam, my dear friends, my extended family, I will always remind you to love and cherish your precious values. These values include your culture and heritage, your warm and embracing hospitality.

On the occasion, Heritage Conservation Centre of Thang Long Imperial Citadel was honoured to receive the Labor Medal, Third class. Representative of the UNESCO in Vietnam Katherine Muller -Marin was also awarded the Friendship Medal at the ceremony.
