In the years to come, Vietnam and India will strengthen and develop their strategic partnership.
India vows to strengthen bilateral ties with Vietnam, especially in terms of defense and security co-operation, as part of the Vietnamese-Indian comprehensive strategic partnership, affirmed the Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Parvathaneni Harish.

"Vietnam and India have upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016, and in the future, the two countries will continue to strengthen and deepen the relationship in national defense and security co-operation as well as trade and exchange between the peoples of the two countries,” said H.E. Parvathaneni Harish on January 17.
The Ambassador noted that Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc would tour India on January 24-26, where he plans to meet his Indian counterpart and attend the ASEAN-India Summit on shared values and common destiny in New Delhi on January 25. “In addition, leaders from the two countries will also focus on co-operation in the areas of culture, science, and technology, as well as training, especially through the co-operation between universities,” the Indian Ambassador told Hanoitimes.
Notably, according to the Indian Ambassador, Vietnam and India will deepen bilateral co-operation in a number of key areas, such as the peaceful use of nuclear power and space research. “India has set out objectives in an attempt to help Vietnam create various energy sources by 2022,” he said, adding that the two sides are also considering co-operation in the textile and garments segment.
Vietnam and India have upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the Indian PM’s official visit to Vietnam in 2016 and vowed to increase two-way trade volume to $15 billion by 2020. Both sides signed a contract for Offshore High-Speed Patrol Boats between M/S Larsen & Toubro and Vietnam Border Guards, utilizing a US$100 million credit line for defense procurement extended by India to Vietnam. PM Narendra Modi also announced a grant of $5 million for the construction of an Army Software Park at Telecommunications University in Nha Trang.
The two-way trade volume between Vietnam and India has been at $7.8 billion in 2015 and over US$10 billion in 2017, according to official statistics. “India has also assisted Vietnam in training its peacekeepers who will join task forces in Africa,” added Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish. “Security is one of the important fields for future strategic co-operation between Vietnam and India.” Vietnam is India’s fourth largest trading partner in the ASEAN bloc and India is among Vietnam’s top 10 trading partners.
