Vietnam ambassador’s speech at UN session

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga has delivered a speech at the UN Security Council (UNSC) open debate on comprehensive development to ensure international peace and security.

At the discussion chaired by Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of the Permanent Vietnam Mission to the UN asserted Vietnam shared the views of many countries on close relationship between peace, security and development in which maintaining peace is considered a solid foundation for sustainable development.

Taking into account the needs, interests and concern of all groups and people from a variety of all social strata will help prevent conflicts and maintain peace and social stability, she said.
 

The Vietnamese diplomat confirmed the Vietnamese State has always respected and implemented the principles of equality, non-discrimination, reconciliation and tolerance with a focus on building and comprehensively carrying out national development strategies and policies targeting poor and minority people, women and children.

As a result, Vietnam has been successful in reducing poverty and maintaining stability and further development. In Southeast Asia, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have enhanced cooperation with partners inside and outside the region in order to narrow the development gap, maintain peace and stability towards building an ASEAN Community of peace and prosperity.

Earlier, in their opening speeches, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Chilean President Bachelet underscored the risk of conflicts and instability which not only stem from traditional security aspects but also from inequality and poverty.

The UNSC adopted Presidential Statement (S/PRST/2015/3), confirming the relationship between peace, security and development, while encouraging countries to consider a common approach on comprehensive development so as  prevent conflicts and ensure sustainable stability and peace.
