“Vi - Dam” folk singing becomes intangible cultural heritage of humanity
On November 27, UNESCO officially recognized Vietnam’s “Vi - Dam” folk singing as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity at the 9th session of its Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris.
Vietnam officially has the ninth intangible cultural heritage which honoured worldwide.

The Chairman of the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage officially hammered to mark the recognition of our intangible heritage by the world’s leading cultural institutions.
A representative of the Evaluating Committee stressed that “Vi – Dam” folk singing met UNESCO ‘s requirements.
The heritage has powerful vitality and common values in the Vietnamese community which appeared in various activities of life such as rice cultivation, fabric textile, lullaby, etc.
Therefore, the Evaluating Committee agreed with the Inter-governmental Committee to recognise “Vi – Dam” folk singing as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Shortly after the committee reported, Belgian representative Marc Jacobs who is one of 24 member countries of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage emphasized a profile which Vietnam set out has important and special values, and deserves to be honoured.

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam Dang Thi Bich Lien stressed that the recognition of Vi-Dam as a cultural masterpiece of humanity is of great significance to Vietnam since the folk genre plays an important role in bringing the local community together.
This is an important decision for two provinces in particular and for Vietnam in general. Being aware of “Vi – Dam” folk singing is the representative heritage of humanity, and the property of mankind, Vietnam has committed to properly implementing the provisions of the Convention, an action programme to preserve Vi-Dam singing, and carrying out policies to honour artisans, she also said.
Thanks to being officially cited in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this type of folk singing will have tremendous opportunities to develop further.
