The US President spent about 10 minutes at the memorial before departing for Noi Bai International Airport, where Air Force One was waiting.

US President Joe Biden was in Hanoi on September 10-11 for his state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong.

At the press conference after meeting with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, the US President spoke about the late Senator John McCain, who was the promoter of Vietnam-US relations.

According to Time Magazine, Senator John McCain and the US President were colleagues and friends. Their friendship dates back to the 1970s when Biden was a young senator and Captain McCain was the Navy's liaison officer to the Senate.

The monument to the late Senator John McCain is at Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi's Ba Dinh district.

McCain has been a champion of building diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. He returned to Vietnam many times and visited the monument.

He once showed the photo of the monument to the Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S., Nguyen Tam Chien, saying it was his favorite photo and referring to himself as the only American sculpted in Vietnam.

Sen. John McCain passed away on August 25, 2018 (US time) at 81.
