"President Trong’s selection comes at a time when our bilateral ties with Vietnam have never been stronger", the US diplomat said.
Over the past two decades, the United States and Vietnam have come together to find common purpose based on shared interests. "We have expanded our security ties, forged new economic and commercial linkages, and deepened our people-to-people engagement. We share a common desire to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region", the US embassy in Hanoi said in a statement.
The US ambassador also stressed the hope to continuing to work closely with President Trong on further strengthening and expanding the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership.
Vietnam's National Assembly, the country's supreme legislative body, has elected Nguyen Phu Trong new President with a majority of vote at its plenum on October 23.
Trong is the first person since founding father Ho Chi Minh to hold both posts as party secretary and state president.
