UNFPA to help Vietnam make population policies
11:29, 2015/04/01
Head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission Vuong Dinh Hue and Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ritsu Nacken explored the possibility of cooperation in designing population-related policies during their working session in Hanoi on March 31.
Hue was appreciative of the UNFPA’s support to Vietnam in population work and socio-economic development over the past 40 years.
The commission wants to work together with agencies at home and abroad, including the UNFPA, to better do its job of policy counseling, especially those regarding the improvement of population quality, and the design of policies and strategies appropriate to the “aging population” period, he said.

UNFPA has been active in Viet Nam since 1977 through the first Joint Cooperative Programme with the Government covering population and development, providing a total assistance of 191.3 million USD.
It has worked to improve public access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, supported the collection and use of high-quality population data, facilitated policy dialogue, and helped the Government in developing, implementing and monitoring evidence-based policies related to sexual and reproductive health, population and development, and gender.
It is undertaking the Programme 5 for the 2012-2016 period with a commitment worth 33.1 million USD to the Vietnamese Government, focusing on population and development, social welfare for the elderly, reproductive health and gender.
This year, the UNFPA and the commission plan the organisation of a workshop that will feature the impacts of demographic changes on Vietnam’s socio-economic development – international experience and lessons.
In the coming years, they will work on a report “Demographic changes in Vietnam – policy orientations to sustainable development”.
