At the reception, VFF Chairman Nguyen Thien Nhan said that Vietnam wishes to receive more support from the UN to fulfill its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to the VFF leader, although Vietnam has become a middle-income nation, the country still faces many difficulties.
Therefore, Nhan stressed, along with the Vietnamese Government’s resolve and endeavours, support given by the international community, including the UN, is significant to help the country reach the SDGs.
Vietnam highly appreciates and backs the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Chairman Nhan said, adding that the agenda has encompassed three pillars of sustainable development – economy, society and environment.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the UN General Assembly in New York in September, 2015. The 2030 Agenda sets out a global development vision and global partnership, along with actions required for sustainable development across the globe over the next 15 years.
The 2030 Agenda includes 17 goals and 169 specific targets to wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change.
According to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen The Phuong, Vietnam has committed itself to supporting and participating in the implementation of the goals.
The Vietnamese Government always attaches great importance to sustainable development and has defined it as the constant goal of socio-economic development, focusing on poverty reduction, child care, health care, education and gender equality.
VFF Chairman Ngan noted that Vietnam’s achievements in actualising the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will create a firm foundation for the country to realise the SDGs.
Vietnam always attaches important role to cooperate with the UN and appreciates the organisation’s support for national socio-economic development, he added.
As an active and responsible member of the UN, Vietnam has implemented the “One UN” initiative and implemented its responsibilities as a member of the Human Rights Council and the Economic and Social Council.
The VFF leader said that Vietnam is preparing to participate in peace-keeping operations.
During the meeting, Pratibha Mehta said issues raised by her host are in conformity with strategies that the UN is building.
The UN is due to help all Vietnamese people benefit from SDGs in the next 15 years, she said, stressing the VFF’s role in mobilising the participation of people from all walks of life on the path towards sustainable development.
She noted that the initiative to measure public satisfaction about State agencies’ services and public administration via phone, as well as the Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI), have showed effective in Vietnam and should be rolled out on a larger scale.
