Cai luong (southern folk opera) meritorious artist Tu Suong opens the first day of festival themed "Far East Identity".
The three-day event, co-organised by Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism and the Golden Communication Group, will offer domestic and international visitors a chance to admire more than 1,400 of the latest fashion designs by 153 designers from Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries.
Cai Luong (southern folk opera) meritorious artist Tu Suong opened the first day of festival themed ‘Far East Identity’, with the 30-kilogram design of designer Le Long Dung. The design was completed in three months with brocade material, hand embroidered patterns and crystal stones.
Cai Luong is a form of modern folk opera in Vietnam. It blends southern Vietnamese folk songs, classical music, hát tuồng (a classical theatre form based on Chinese opera), and modern spoken drama.
Cai Luong can be compared to a sort of play with the added aspect of Vong Co. This term literally means "nostalgia for the past", it is a special type of singing with the background music often being the đàn tranh zither or the Vietnamized guitar. In a typical Cai Luong play, the actresses and actors would use a combination of regular spoken dialogue and vọng cổ to express their thoughts and emotions.
Cai Luong normally highlights/praises Vietnamese moral values. There are mainly two types of Cai Luong: Cai Luong Tuong Co (ancient) and Cai Luong Xa Hoi (modern).
After the first day, the next two days will be organized around other themes and activities, including “New Waves” and “Future Stars”, respective. The performances will offer the audience a unique fashion experience by using the latest technologies, such as 5D Mapping, where the model introduces many costumes on stage without changing clothes, the application of the Magic Mirror in showcasing products, and fashion designs using virtual reality technology.
According to Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the festival is expected to offer businesses and fashion designers a platform to seek business cooperation opportunities and develop the fashion design industry. The festival is scheduled to be held annually, creating a unique tourist highlight for Ho Chi Minh City, he added.
