This is the best result Vietnam has ever attained at an IBO event. Accordingly, at this year’s event, held from July 23 to 30 at the University of Warwick, Coventry, the UK, 12th grader Truong Dong Hung from Hue High School for the Gifted won the only gold medal for Vietnam.
Especially, Hung’s results (55 per cent practical and 75 per cent theoretical) were ranked 22 out of 245 candidates and also the highest personal achievement of any Vietnamese student to attend the IBO so far.
The two remaining silvers went to Duong Tien Quang Huy from Lam Son High School for the Gifted in Thanh Hoa province and Nguyen Phuong Thao from High School for Gifted Students under the Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University.
With this result, Vietnam ranked 12th overall, following the success by other teams attending Mathematical, Physics and Chemistry Olympiads. At the IBO 2016 hosted by Vietnam, the hosts won a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.
Vietnam, together with the US, Chinese Taipei, China, Singapore, South Korea, Russia, the UK, Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Indonesia and the Czech Republic, won gold medals.
Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha delivered his congratulations to the winners, saying that the outstanding achievement by the IBO team continues to affirm the success of Vietnamese delegations participating in this year’s Olympiads. The Olympiads are also a useful platform for the education sector to discover, select and foster the skills of talented students.
The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is an annual event where students from all over the world compete on their knowledge of biology. The participants are pre-university school students. To take part in the IBO, the students must be in the top four in the National Biology Olympiad in their individual countries. The 28th IBO was held at the University of Warwick, Coventry, the UK with the participation of 245 contestants from 68 countries and territories.
