Speaking at the MERRO scholarship awarding ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ta Thanh Van, rector of the Hanoi Medical University, said that his university has eight students winning MERRO scholarships so far, including four female students.
MERRO scholarships are awarded to medical students with excellent academic achievements; however, all of them come from poor families, Van added.
"The scholarship is awarded to poor students who have excellent academic achievements, strong will to overcome difficulties and the sense of responsibility to the community and society,” the rector said, adding that his university and the MERRO Foundation hope students understand that their study is not only for themselves but also for the society’s benefits.
Appreciating the Hanoi Medical University’s support in finding students deserving to receive the scholarship, President of MERRO Group Atsuko Matsuoka said the scholarship fund was established with a view to training human resources - the successive generations in some regions including ASEAN nations.
In addition to the JPY120,000 (US$ 1,099) scholarship per year for each student, after graduation, students who received the scholarship will receive support from both Vietnam and Japan to have the opportunity to study in Japan to improve qualifications and professional knowledge.
