Tet customs to be re-enacted in Hanoi
Thuy Duong 20:37, 2021/01/13
A variety of ancient Tet activities will be re-enacted for locals and international tourists to learn about Vietnamese fine traditions.

On the occasion of Vietnamese traditional Lunar New Year of the Ox 2021, the Dinh Lang Viet (Vietnamese Communal House) club and the Hanoi Old Quarter management board hold a Tet celebration event entitled “Tet Viet- Tet Pho” (Vietnamese Tet - Street Tet) that will take place on February 6, 2021 (or the 25th day of the twelve months in the Lunar calendar) in downtown Hanoi.

A holy procession is re-enacted in the pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem lake by Dinh Lang Viet Club..

The event will feature various Tet activities such as the erection of a Cay Neu (or “Tet’s tree”), folk-art performances, Village’s God worshiping rituals and Holy processions, among others.

The “Cay Neu” is a tall bamboo tree without leaves that is usually erected in front of a Vietnamese house before Tet holiday. Some symbolic objects including bows, arrows, bells, gongs and other leaves to ward off evil spirits will be hung on the tree with the hope that the bad luck of the previous year will be chased away, and everyone has a happy and healthy New Year.

Also, within the framework of the program, there will be other cultural activities including  performances of traditional music from the North, Central and South regions; a display of Hanoian’s old Tet ambiance; a showcase of traditional ao dai, among others, at various relic sites in Hanoi’s Old Quarter area including the Kim Ngan communal house, Phung Hung mural street and the Centre for Cultural Exchange (No 50 Dao Duy Tu street, Hanoi).

Calligraphy performance is an interesting Tet activity.

The Dinh Lang Viet (Vietnamese Communal Houses) club was established in 2014, gathering dozens of people from all walks of life, who are keen on preserving Vietnamese ancient cultural values of communal houses. The club has already organized many Vietnamese New Year programs at famous relic sites across the country since 2016.

With the aim of contributing to spreading traditional Vietnamese values, promoting cultural images of Vietnam and Hanoi to the community and international friends, this is the second time the “Tet Viet- Tet Pho” event is organized in Hanoi.

The event is expected to draw  participants who are heritage lovers from the provinces and cities of Bac Lieu, Thua Thien - Hue, Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho and Hai Phong as well as local and international tourists.
