General Director of the General Statistics Office (GSO) Head Nguyen Bich Lam emphasised the need for statisticians to be independent and objective to ensure the quality of the numbers they produce.

Speaking at a press conference on October 19 on World Statistics Day and the latest version of the Revised Statistics Law, Lam said the revised law strictly forbade any actions that interfered with the making of statistics.
According to Director of the GSO’s Statistical Standard Methodology and IT Department Tran Tuan Hung, after more than 10 years of implementation, the 2003 Statistics Law had created a legal foundation for statistical activities, confirming the important role of statistical work and the statistics office. It also helped increase the efficiency of State management of statistical work.
However, the law had several shortcomings, especially a lack of figures that reflected the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the economy during industrialisation and modernisation. It has also lacked stipulations on promoting statistics to the public.
At the event, GSO Deputy General Director Vu Thanh Liem said that the second World Statistics Day (October 20), with the theme Better Data, Better Lives, aims to raise public awareness about the important work of statisticians. Accurate and objective data will support national and international activities, including efforts to improve the lives of low-income and vulnerable groups.
