South Korea pledges aid worth US$1 million for typhoon-hit Vietnam

South Korea will provide US$1 million worth of humanitarian assistance to Vietnam where a powerful typhoon recently killed more than 90 people, the foreign ministry said Friday.

Typhoon Damrey ravaged Vietnam's central region on Nov. 4, killing 82 residents and leaving 26 others missing. It also damaged some 120,500 houses and inflicted other property damage.
"The South Korean government expresses its sincere consolation to the people of Vietnam over the typhoon damage and hopes for their prompt return to normal as well as recovery of the damage," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
In addition to the latest assistance, South Korea plans to expand its humanitarian aid to other countries that are affected by natural disasters, it also said.
Vietnam's Thu Bon River overflowed and flooded the streets of Hoi An after the typhoon pummelled the country. Vietnam's search and rescue committee said the victims were killed during landslides and when a ship capsized. Authorities were trying to avoid flooding around the city of Danang, where world leaders are meeting for the APEC summit this week.
Hoi An locals have to clean up some muddy streets and debris around the city, using brooms to push sludge from their homes onto the street.
According to Restaurant owner Nguyen Thi Uyen, Hoi An had flooded for four days. “The damage for us is that there were many tourists who came but we could not serve them. The flood comes almost every year, but this year it was extremely high due to hydropower plants releasing water from the dams”, the owner said.
Head of Commune Police, Truong Duc Lien said, in recent years, the floods came quite often and quite suddenly due to the impact of climate change
Typhoon Damrey, which struck on November 4, was the 12th major storm of the year.
