Sharing experience in mechanism for supervising children’s rights
A workshop on Mechanism for supervising the implementation of effective children`s rights - International experience and Vietnam took place on December 7 in northern province of Bac Giang. Vice Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Uong Chu Luu chaired the workshop.
The event is held by the NA Standing Committee’s Legislative Research Institute, representatives from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF in Vietnam, foreign embassies and organisations in Vietnam.
The workshop also was attended by UNICEF Chief Representative in Vietnam Youssouf Abdel-Jelil and Deputy Chairman of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Yasmeen Shariff.
Speaking at the workshop, NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu affirmed that among developing countries, faced with many difficulties and challenges, Vietnam has made important achievements in children care and protection through its special policies and priorities over the last 25 years.
The NA Vice Chairman said the workshop was a good opportunity for Vietnam to study and exchange experience on the contents related to children care and protection.
Vietnam is honoured to be one of the first countries in Asia to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), he stressed, adding that the country has always given priority to protecting, caring for and educating children.
However, Vietnam is meeting difficulties and limitations, Luu said.
Vietnam wishes to receive more support to enhance people-elected agencies’ ability to build and supervise policies, promote campaigns to raise public awareness of children’s rights and assure that the country’s lawmaking adheres closely to the CRC, he said.
Addressing the event, UNICEF Chief Representative in Vietnam Youssouf Abdel-Jelil said that Vietnam has made efforts to improve law suit to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The UNICEF Representative said his agency is honoured to work with the Vietnamese NA to organise workshops on building an independent mechanism for supervising children’s rights in Vietnam.
He promised that UNICEF will help Vietnam complete the work.
At the conference, international experts from Norway, India, Malaysia, Mongolia and UNICEF shared experiences in setting up and operating mechanism for supervising children’s rights.
The workshop also was attended by UNICEF Chief Representative in Vietnam Youssouf Abdel-Jelil and Deputy Chairman of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Yasmeen Shariff.
