School principal in North Vietnam suspended after schoolgirl maltreated

Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha affirmed that this was a serious and heartbreaking case, exceeding ordinary school scuffle, and a lesson for the whole education sector.
The principal of Phu Ung secondary school in Vietnam’s northern province of Hung Yen has been suspended for 15 days after an assault on one of his female students by a gang of classmates, Kinhtedothi.vn quoted Head of Education and Training division of An Thi district Truong Van Ty as saying.

Five students who participated in the assault were suspended from school so that the school and authorities can investigate and clarify the cause of the incident, Truong Van Ty added.

A video clip when viral in Vietnam and caused public anger. The ninth-grade student was brutally beaten by five classmates on March 22. The incident happened after the class finished when most staff and students had left. The video clip showed five students removing the girl’s clothes and repeatedly kicking her in the head and chest. She is being treated at the provincial psychiatry and mental health hospital.

Director of the Department of Children under the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dang Hoa Nam said that this is a very shocking incident because of the serious offense of the student’s dignity and body integrity.

On March 31, at the meeting with Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha, Chairman of Hung Yen People's Committee Nguyen Van Phong said they were considering suspending Phu Ung secondary school’s Board of Principal and the head teacher in charge of the assaulted schoolgirl.

Minister Phung Xuan Nha affirmed that this was a serious and heartbreaking case, exceeding ordinary school scuffle, and a lesson for the whole education sector. He acknowledged that the principal and the head teacher were not aware of their responsibilities and tasks, and failed to handle the situation.

The minister asked the authorities to review and clarify the incident, strictly handle the concerned individuals.
