Vietnam Book Day is an annual nationwide observance held on April 21. It was established in 2014. This holiday focuses on raising public awareness about the importance of books and encouraging reading in the community.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, April 21 was selected as Vietnam Book Day because one of the first Vietnamese books was published in April. It was “Duong Cach Menh” (Revolutionary Road) by Ho Chi Minh, the first president of Vietnam. Additionally, April 23 is World Book and Copyright Day established by UNESCO. Vietnam Book Day aims to link national activities with this global observance.
Vietnam Book Day honors the role and importance of books in education and social life as well as promotes reading culture in Vietnam. It also celebrates people who are involved in book publishing and distribution: authors, editors, publishers, distributors, librarians.
On the occasion, numerous events are organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. They include but are not limited to book festivals, exhibitions, book streets, book exchanges, contests, discussions, seminars, workshops and other activities.
