Romania supports EVFTA signing: President

The agreement, along with the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), is a specific step to brings benefits to Vietnam, EU and Romania, said Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
Romania fully supports and pushes for the signing of EU – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) during the country’s six-month rotating presidency of the EU in the first half of 2019, according to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

These agreements are specific steps to bring benefits to Vietnam, EU and Romania, said Iohannis in a meeting with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on April 15. 

Iohannis considered Phuc’s visit to the country an important milestone to promote strong cooperation of the two countries in various fields in the coming time, especially as the two countries celebrate the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations by 2020. 

At the meeting, Phuc expected greater cooperation between Vietnam and Romania in oil and gas, agriculture, food processing, among others, and developing a comprehensive relation on labor, education, security, defense, science and technology.

As of present, trade between Vietnam and Romania at US$250 million is modest compared to the potential of the two countries, PM Phuc said at the Romania – Vietnam Business Forum held at the same day. 

According to the Vietnamese prime minister, enterprises from Vietnam and Romania would be a decisive factor determining the scale of economic cooperation between the two countries. He hoped Vietnam to be an attractive destination for Romanian enterprises given its large scale and favorable business environment. 

Acknowledging the small scale of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, Mihai Daraban, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), said Romanian enterprises are very interested in Vietnam’s market as the country seeks greater global integration. 

Romania’s Deputy Prime Minister Viorel Stefan said the EVFTA would open up new directions for EU and Romania, adding enterprises at the forum would be the main beneficiaries from the deal. 

Vietnam is stepping up efforts for the signing and ratification of the EVFTA and EVIPA after the US withdrew from the landmark CPTPP, which embraces Vietnam and other 10 trans-Pacific nations and came into force last year.
