Railway Transport and Trade Company (Ratraco) and Russia’s RZD Logistics Company recently launched the first container train service connecting Vietnam and Russia, easing the goods exchange between the two countries.
The train, which departed from Moscow, Russia to Hanoi, Vietnam, carried Russian cosmetics exports to Vietnam. The trip took 23 days, including time for finalizing transit procedures at border gates. Ratraco said that it will continuously improve the service to reduce transport time to 18 days.

The train trip has brought about considerable benefits to customers, as it shortened the transport time by half compared to marine transport. It has also halved the freight rate in comparison to air transport.
ViacheslavKharinov, head of Russian Trade Office in Vietnam, said that the launching of the route is a milestone in the bilateral trade between Vietnam and Russia, adding that the new railway transport service will help accelerate goods exchanges between the two countries and make it more convenient, contributing to increasing the import-export turnover between the two countries.
Previously, in late November last year, Ratracoalso launched the first container train service connecting Vietnam and China. The train departed from Huanggang Station in Nanchang city, Jiangxi province, China and arrived at Yen Vien Station in Hanoi in just four days, beating the 15 days of sea transport by a large margin.
The train carried Chinese goods exported to Vietnam, such as office furniture, food, and spare parts for cars, among others. After arriving to Vietnam, the train travelled back to China carrying Vietnamese export goods, such as agricultural products, minerals, and electronic products, among others.
Vietnam Railway Corporation announced that it is also working on opening more train routes from other Chinese provinces to Vietnam and are attempting to transport goods from Europe, Russia, and Central Asian countries through China to Vietnam and vice versa.
The corporation also said that the demand to export goods by train is high and the corporation has so far received many orders to transport export goods from Vietnam to China, Russia, and other European countries.
