It has become a routine that a sitting US Secretary of State sends greetings to Vietnamese people on the National Day, also known as the Independence Day.
On behalf of the US government, Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo has congratulated Vietnam’s people on the country’s National Day on September 2 as the two former war foes advance bilateral ties in a substantial manner.

In a statement on the department’s website, Pompeo recalled his second visit to Vietnam in 2019 as Secretary of State when he accompanied President Donald Trump at the US-DPRK Summit in Hanoi.

“I have witnessed the remarkable growth of our bilateral partnership. The United States and Vietnam work closely in areas of mutual benefit, including trade and investment, education, health care, energy, and defense,” he said in the statement.

“President Trump’s second visit to Vietnam for the Hanoi Summit in February 2019 reaffirmed our strong partnership and our mutual commitment to peace, security, sovereign independence, and prosperity in the region,” he added.

“Together, we have accomplished much over the past year. As we look forward to the year ahead, our nations will commemorate the 25th anniversary of our bilateral relationship. As you celebrate today, I offer the United States’ best wishes to the people of Vietnam.”
