PM: Vietnam resolutely defends sea and island sovereignty
08:05, 2014/07/17
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has affirmed the nation’s resolve to defend its sacred sea and island sovereignty through combined strength and proper measures in line with international law.
On July 16, PM Nguyen Tan Dung chaired a government meeting on law making work.

Opening the meeting, leaders from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed delegates bout the updated situation relating to China’s illegal placement of its floating oil rig in Vietnam’s territorial waters.
On July 15, China moved the oil rig towards China’s Hainan island and on the morning of July 16, the rig along with escort vessels were out of Vietnam’s waters.
Since May 2, 2014, China had illegally put its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 deep inside Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf escorted by hundreds of military ships and aircraft.
Chinese ships encircled and intentionally rammed and fired high-pressure water canon on Vietnamese coast guard and fisheries surveillance vessels which were undertaking their maritime management missions in Vietnam’s EEZ and continental shelf. The actions by the Chinese side injured many of the fisheries administration officers, causing losses to Vietnamese law enforcement authorities at sea, and even sank one Vietnamese fishing boat.
These acts have infringed upon Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction, seriously violating international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and agreements reached by the two countries' senior leaders and threatening peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region.
“Vietnam always attaches special importance to the ties of sound friendship and cooperation with China on the basis of equality and mutual respect for mutual benefit and development. In that spirit, Vietnam is ready to join hands with China and parties concerned to sit for negotiations on the peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea in accordance with international law.” Dung said.
The Government leader commended competent agencies, law enforcement forces, fishermen and Vietnamese people at home and abroad for showing ardent patriotism, and high responsibility for the struggle to safeguard the nation’s sacred sovereignty.
“Vietnam would like to extend big thanks and desire to continue receiving support from the international community for its just stance and vehement condemnation against acts of violating international law and threatening regional peace and stability.
Protecting sovereignty is a sacred task requiring us to stay active and resolute in combating all infringements of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. We all should stand united to fulfill socio- economic tasks successfully.” Dung affirmed.
