The Government Office released Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s instructions following the meeting between the Government’s leader and related parties on July 13.

By 2020, the Government has agreed to launch a project on the upgrade of the Tan Son Nhat Airport, including the construction of a new terminal, to expand its operation capacity amid rising transportation demand.

At present, the project component of upgrading taxiways and runways has been completed, but the construction of the T3 Terminal is lagging behind schedule due to difficulties in  site clearance.

According to the instruction, the Ministry of Defense is responsible for handing over 16.05 hectares of land under its administration to the contractors, and another 11.89 hectares for the construction of the access road from Tran Quoc Hoan Street, Tan Binh District in July.

The availability of a cleared site would help contractors to start construction right in the third quarter and put the project into operation in September 2024, noted the Government Office.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance are tasked with submitting the project financing mechanism  to the Prime Minister in July.

Under the plan, the new terminal will be invested with an estimated capital of VND11 trillion (US$470 million) for a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, with the state-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) as  investor. The construction period of the new terminal would be around 37 months.
