Old Fort bridge over Thach Han River opened to traffic
On July 26, the Old Fort bridge linking two sides of Thach Han river was opened to traffic by the Ministry of Transport and Quang Tri Province’s People Committee. The bridge was invested with over 680 billion dong (roughly 30 million USD. Politburo Member and Standing Deputy Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong attended the inauguration ceremony.
Old Fort Bridge is 311m long and 15m wide and includes 9 spans. It is reinforced with concrete abutments on pile foundation with diameters of 1.2m. The bridge is part of a bypass of the National Highway no. 1 with the length of over 5.9km.
Old Fort Bridge will make it more convenient for citizens crossing the river and paying respect to Heroic Martyrs in Quang Tri Old Fort.

The Old Fort Bridge along with the National Highway no. 1 bypass will connect Quang Tri township and Dong Ha city, two Quang Tri major urban areas, reducing travel time and saving cost for the people. It also creates premises for these two towns to expand in the future.
From now on, Vietnamese army men and visitors wishing to visit and pay tribute to the Martyrs at the Special National Monument at Quang Tri Fort on the side of Thach Han river will find it more convenient with the Old Fort bridge opened to traffic.
The Old Fort bridge and the bypass of the National Highway No. 1 construction was kicked start on September 17, 2016. According to Le Duc Tien, the Director of Quang Tri Department of Transportation, these two works were identified as the key projects, a proof of the gratitude towards those who sacrificed their lives for Quang Tri province and the nation. The Old Fort Bridge project was built at the site where 45 years ago Vietnamese army men crossed the Thach Han river under heavy shellings to defend Quang Tri Fort for 81 days and nights.
“The project was completed ahead of schedule, right on the 70th anniversary of the war invalids and martyrs (July 27, 1947 to July 27, 2017). This is a meaningful event to commemorate and pay tribute to the spirit of heroic martyrs who fought in the 81 days and nights battle 45 years ago, contributing to the unification and national independence.” Tien says.
