New British ambassador takes office in Vietnam
The new ambassador started his work in Hanoi yesterday.
Gareth Ward, the new British Ambassador Designate to Vietnam, on August 6, 2018 started his work in Hanoi, the Bristish embassy in Vietnam has informed.
He is scheduled to submit his Letter of Credentials from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to State President Tran Dai Quang on August 7 to allow him officially to take up his position as British Ambassador to Vietnam.
Ambassador Ward takes office as the relationship between the UK and Vietnam is entering a new phase. After 45 years of diplomatic relations, and eight years of strategic partnership, the UK and Vietnam have a diverse and productive range of contacts.
"Next year, as the UK will leave the European Union, our goal is to maintain a special partnership with the EU as well as strengthening its presence in the Asia Pacific," the embassy stated.
The Ambassador looks forward to high level contacts with Vietnam in the months to come, and to demonstrating to the public in both countries how our bilateral relationship is contributing to growth and prospertity as well as solving global challenges.
Ambassador Ward is a senior diplomat who has worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) since 1996. He served as Consul General in St. Petersburg, Russia for three years from 2010 to 2013 and another five years as FCO’s Head of China Department. He is married with two children.
