Approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, the day is to honor Mandela and inspire others to carry on his efforts to "take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time," according to a statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation Initiative. The UN General Assembly declared 18 July "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the world’s peace, freedom and justice.

A range of activities have been organised in Hanoi to mark the International Nelson Mandela Day. The event called on individuals, organisations and community to spend at least 67 minutes to help change the world for the better and give help to disadvantaged individuals and community, and in doing so, to build a global movement for the good.

This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day, themed “Take Action, Inspire Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day,” took all proceeds to be given to Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Hanoi. Gifts will be offered to 150 children with cleft palate who undergo health check-ups and surgery in July.

Nelson Mandela passed away on December 5 at the age of 95. He was a staunch soldier and a prominent hero of the South African people, who devoted his whole life to the fight against oppression, injustice and apartheid in South Africa and the world as well.
