National Sports Games 2022: Hanoi Sports aims to lead gold medal tally

The 9th National Sports Games opening ceremony will officially take place on December 9. The Hanoi sports delegation has already affirmed its leading position in several competitions.

The event, considered the largest in the history of sports in the country, will take place from December 9 to December 21 in Ha Long City- Quang Ninh Province and ten other provinces throughout the country.

This is a four-year multi-sport event involving participants from provinces, cities of the first level of administrative division, police, the armed forces, education, and the training sector.

On the eve of the opening of the national sports event, Hanoi's sports delegation reaped more success than expected, with a series of gold medals in billiards and snooker, diving, and shooting categories.

Leading in Billiard-Snooker category


In the Billiards and Snooker competitions that took place on December 1 in Ha Dong Sports Stadium in Hanoi, the Hanoi team won two gold medals: one by billiards player Doan Thi Ngoc Le who competed in the Pool 9 women’s billiards; and the other by Pham Hoai Nam who competed in the men’s singles Snooker 6 red ball.

In the final, Le competed with player Tran Tu Tran from Ba Ria - Vung Tau and won convincingly by 7-4. Meanwhile, another Hanoi athlete, Bui Xuan Vang, won a bronze medal.

In the male competition content, Nam won 3-1 against Pham Hoai Nguyen, who also came from Hanoi to win the championship.

Maintain 1st place in Karate

After five days of competition at the Gymnasium of Ninh Binh Province, the Hanoi Karate Team has proved its level, successfully defending the first position with four Gold, four Silver, and five Bronze medals.

In particular, in the team Kumite competitions that took place on the last day of competition on December 1, Hanoi athletes participated in all three final competitions and won two among them: “The Kumite male team- group 2” and “The Kumite female team - group 1”, bringing back two more gold medals for Hanoi team of Karate.


Outstandingly far ahead of other teams in diving

On November 30 and December 1 at Quang Ninh Provincial Sports Center, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, the Hanoi Sports delegation also succeeded in the diving competition.

This is considered the “golden days” of Hanoi sports as the delegation won seven gold medals, seven silver, and two bronze medals, taking first place in diving at the 9th National Sports Games.

The host team, Quang Ninh, placed second with three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, and the Hai Phong team placed third with three silver and three bronze medals.

There are 40 athletes from five localities, namely Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong, Nam Dinh, and Quang Ninh, competing in 13 events in diving at this year Games.

Shooting showed the strength of Hanoi Sports

In addition, the Hanoi Sports Delegation also leads in shooting, considered a strength of athletes from the capital city.

After six days of competition, which took place from November 23 to 29 in Hanoi, the Hanoi team took the lead position with 17 Gold, 15 Silver, and 7 Bronze medals. The capital's sports delegation has successfully broken 11 records and set 12 new records.

The Military Sports Delegation won 16 Gold, 14 Silver, and 6 Bronze Medals to take second place.

This year, 260 athletes from 13 sports teams competed in pistol, air rifle, portable air rifle, flying saucer, double trap flying saucer, and flying saucer skeet, among others.

The 9th National Sports Games brings together more than 17,000 people, including nearly 10,000 athletes competing in 43 sports. Recently, many competitions have been held in many localities, such as boat racing, shooting, and karate.

Hanoi is one of the localities with the largest number of athletes, up to 1,359 coaches and athletes, competing in 42 out of 43 sports in the program. The delegation also aims to win the highest position at the 9th National Sports Games this year.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Ha Viet, Director General of the General Department of Physical Education and Sports, this is the largest-scale national sports game event in history since it was first held in 1985.

“The Games would comprehensively prove the training, coaching, and competition of local sports industries, and at the same time select excellent athletes for national teams to compete internationally,” he said.

Vietnamese sport has set as its most important task this year the search for the best athletes for the competitions of ASIAD 19 (to be held in 2023), SEA Games 32 (2023), and Olympic Games (2024).
