More and more scholarships gifted for needy students
By Anh Kiet 16:28, 2015/09/30
Offering annual scholarships to needy students is so meaningful. University dreams have came true for 34 disadvantaged students from the central region after they were granted the “SPELL Goes to College” (SGTC) scholarships in Da Nang City.
Thirty-one of the students are among the 4,000 beneficiaries of the SPELL programme, a long-term fund to help pupils finish their education from primary school through high school. Three other students with outstanding academic performance passed the scholarship interview to be granted the reward.

The scholarships’ combined value amounts to almost 2.3 billion VND (102,687 USD). Each student receives approximately 2,960 USD with three receiving double the amount for their extreme circumstances. Besides financial assistance, scholarship recipients will have chance to take part in skills training courses and charitable campaigns.

Similar funding has also been offered to students studying in central Hue city and Ho Chi Minh City earlier this year. Since 2011, the SGTC has sponsored 241 learners at a total cost of more than 700,000 USD. The programme was initiated by East Meets West, a non-governmental organisation that has worked in Vietnam since 1988.

Vietnamese expats in the US presented scholarships to 30 Vietnamese-Korean students living across Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces through Dai Nhat, a Ho Chi Minh City company. In Ho Chi Minh City, the Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund awarded 395 scholarships valued at 3.4 billion VND (151,785 USD) and sponsored 5.06 billion VND (225,892 USD) for charities and education promotion organisations nationwide.
