Meeting marks national action month for HIV/AIDS prevention

Vietnam has the fifth-highest number of people living with HIV in Asia-Pacific.
The figure was announced at a meeting in Hanoi on November 30 in response to the national action month on HIV/AIDS prevention and control with the participation of more than 3,000 people.
The Ministry of Health reported that Vietnam now has around 260,000 HIV infections. By June, more than 86,700 HIV/AIDS patients have received ARV treatment.
Despite a decline in the number of newly detected cases, the total number of HIV infections remains high.
Currently, over 80% of villages and towns and nearly 99% of districts have been reported with HIV carriers.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long stated that over the past 25 years, Vietnam has obtained significant results in controlling the growth rate of new HIV infections and reducing AIDS-related mortality.
The country is considered a bright example for HIV/AIDS prevention in the world.
However, the situation remains unpredictable and HIV/AIDS is still one of the leading causes of death in Vietnam. Around 10,000 news cases have been detected recently.
Vietnam is positively responding to World AIDS Days between 2011 - 2015 which is themed "Getting to zero: zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination, Zero AIDS-related deaths” and its theme for this year is “non-discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS” as this type of discrimination is very serious in the country.
