The upgrading work is expected to meet cargo transport and socio-economic development demand in Danang city and the central region as per requirement by the prime minister.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has assigned the People’s Committee of Danang city to fully undertake the upgartding project of Lien Chieu seaport in the central region.

On March 15, the prime minister approved the adjustments of the general planning of Danang city to 2030, with a vision to 2045, in which, Lien Chieu port is one of the key works in the city.

The seaport, with the total investment of VND3.43 trillion (US$149.13 million), would become a multimodal distribution hub serving as an international gateway in the central region.

Currently, the city’s Tien Sa port is able to handle only around six million tons of cargo a year. Therefore, it is necessary to upgrade Lien Chieu port to meet cargo transport and socio-economic development demand in Danang city and the central region as per requirement by the prime minister.

In order to solve difficulties in the process of drawing up and assessing the pre-feasibility report of the project, the prime minister has approved the proposal by the Ministry of Transport and Danang city People’s Committee to assign the committee the construction of Lien Chieu port.

The committee is responsible for managing and building items of the state budget funded project according to the law.

Danang expected investment preparation to be finalized timely and work on the project would begin soon so that the port would be inaugurated by 2024.

Once completed, the port will ease the pressure on Tien Sa and Son Tra ports as well as urban traffic.

At present, the quantity of general cargo handled by Danang seaports is forecast to grow by 16.2% on-year (22.6% for container shipments).

The cargo is estimated to reach 10 million tons in 2020 and 30 million tons in 2030, exceeding not only the handling capacity of Tien Sa port but also road infrastructure in the city. Serious traffic congestion and negative effects on the environment and tourism growth are expected.

Tien Sa port is getting full to bursting point and cannot be expanded, thus it is imperative to construct Lien Chieu port and make it the new the international gateway to the country. The development of this seaport is of critical importance since it helps to maintain Danang’s position in the regional growth, according to experts.
