Leaders pay tribute to departed war heroes

Viet Nam`s top leaders yesterday laid a wreath and offered incense at the Monument to War Heroes and Martyrs in Ha Noi to mark the 67th anniversary of Viet Nam`s War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27).
The delegation included General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Chairman of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan.
Former PartyGeneral Secretary Le Kha Phieu, former President Tran Duc Luong and former Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Van An also attended the event.
Later, they paid tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum.
Delegations from the CPV Central Commission, ministries and localities also laid wreaths at the monument and paid homage to the late President yesterday.
Requiem for soldiers
A solemn requiem was held in the northern mountainous province of Son La on Thursday and Friday to commemorate the heroic soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation.
The event was part of the nationwide activities to mark the anniversary.
From 1930 to 1945, more than 1,000 revolutionary soldiers were detained at Son La Prison. The prison is now the resting place of 30 martyrs who were held there and eventually lost their lives.
Reburial ceremonies were also held yesterday in the southern provinces of Tay Ninh and Kien Giang for the remains of 264 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia during the war.
Since 2001, the remains of more than 2,900 Vietnamese soldiers who fell in Cambodia have been repatriated to Tay Ninh, while the remains of over 1,800 have been taken home to Kien Giang.
