Kovalevskaya Award - An honour of Vietnamese female scientists
Prime Minister Phuc and former Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan presented the 2016 Kovalevskaia Award to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Kim Phi Phung, a lecturer from the University of Natural Science under the Vietnam National University – HCM City at a ceremony in Hanoi on March 7.
Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a dialogue held as part of the “Proud Vietnamese Women” programme and the ceremony for the 2016 Kovalevskaia Award in Hanoi on March 7.
The two programmes were organised by the Vietnam Women’s Union to celebrate the 107th anniversary of International Women’s Day and the the 12th National Women’s Congress.
Speaking at the event, PM Phuc expressed his pleasure at participating in the event, which honoured talented Vietnamese women working in various fields of life.
The PM stressed that the Party and State have paid special attention to solving women-related issues, such as violence against women and girls, human trafficking and food safety.
The Cabinet leader reiterated the Government’s commitment to realise the goals of gender equality and women’s empowerment set under the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He also affirmed that the Government will closely coordinate with the Vietnam Women’s Union and local authorities to create the most favourable conditions possible for women to actively join public life.
The Government has also worked out policies to support small and medium-sized businesses run by women, he said.
PM Phuc pledged more practical and effective policies to promote women’s start ups.
During the event, Prime Minister Phuc and former Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan presented the 2016 Kovalevskaia Award to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Kim Phi Phung, a lecturer on the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Natural Science under the Vietnam National University - HCM City.
Dr. Phung is a leading specialist with numerous research studies in the chemical - pharmaceutical field, discovering new natural cures for many diseases, including cervical cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, or diabetes, and Alzheimer diseases.
Five female staff of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology also received a Kovalevskaya 2016 award for their project on nano technology applied in agricultural production and health care.
They are Associate Prof. Dr. Tran Kim Anh; Associate Prof. Dr. Pham Thu Nga; Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Tung; Associate Prof. Dr. Vu Thi Bich; and Associate Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Nhung.
According to Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem, Director of the Institute for Materials Research under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the prize is an honour not only for the team, but also for Vietnam’s science community.
The five female scientists have managed to take care of their families while developing their career, contributing to the nation’s science development, he noted.
Also on this occasion, another 100 outstanding women who have made excellent achievements in science, education, healthcare, economy, agriculture and social work were presented with certificates of merit from the Vietnam Women’s Union in acknowledgement of their significant contributions to all fields of life.
