The International Biology Olympiad is a contest in the field of biology specifically designed for high school students under the age of 20.

Two Hanoi students have won medals, including one silver and two bronze, at the 34th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2023), according to the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

The silver medal was awarded to Nguyen Tien Loc, an 11th grader from the High School for Gifted Students at the University of Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi (VNU-HN).

A bronze medal was won by Tran Pham Manh, a 12th grader from the High School for Gifted Students at the University of Natural Sciences under VNU-HN.

Another bronze medal went to Vu The Anh, a 12th grader from Vinh Phuc High School for Gifted Students in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

IBO 2023, held in the city of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on July 2-11, attracted 320 contestants from 80 countries and territories worldwide. It was judged by 300 members and a group of international biology experts.

The IBO is a biology competition specifically for high school students under 20. The first IBO was held in Czechoslovakia in 1990 and has taken place annually since then.

Vietnam has been sending participants to the competition for many years. At the 2016 IBO, the first IBO hosted by Vietnam, the country won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

At the 2018 competition, Nguyen Phuong Thao, from the High School for Gifted Students at the University of Natural Sciences under VNU-HN, took first place out of 261 contestants. Thao also marked the highest personal achievement of any Vietnamese student participating in the IBO.
