Institute of Mathematics to facilitate technologies in real world applications
On December 14, the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the international workshop “Optimization algorithms and some related problems” held by the Institute of Mathematics.
In the event, a special session of the workshop was devoted to Prof. Hoang Tuy's 90th birthday – a prominent Vietnamese applied mathematician for optimization algorithms. The Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc congratulated Prof. Hoang Tuy on his birthday, expressing hope that he will continue contribute to Vietnam’s mathematics study.
The Prime Minister cited a famous quote of Galilei “Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe” and “Mathematics is the key and door to sciences” to stress the strong development of mathematics nowadays and its impact toward real world applications. The Prime Minister said the government has put up effort to facilitate the development of Vietnam’s mathematics study and talent mathematicians.
With significant contributions of Prof. Hoang Tuy, the Prime Minister said Prof. Hoang Tuy is the outstanding mathematician of Vietnam and set an example for the next generation. Prof. Hoang Tuy along with Prof. Le Van Thiem have been the cornerstone of Vietnam mathematics study. Prof. Hoang Tuy has been one of the first to establish the Vietnam mathematics study and taking Vietnamese students to participate in International Mathematics Olympiads. In 1964, Prof. Hoang Tuy invented the Tuy’s cut, which opened a new branch of applied mathematics being the global optimization.
The Prime Minister shared that in any era of Vietnam there are many talents, for which he has strong belief that with the intelligent nature, determination and the pride of nation, Vietnam will have more scientists making the country proud such as Prof. Hoang Tuy.
At the workshop, the Prime Minister expressed hope that the Vietnamese youth to focus on science study and overcoming challenges, difficulties to study, research, be creative and contributing to the country development. As such, the government will create favorable conditions for the young generation, scientists and the Institute of Mathematics to realize potential and reaching new heights in science, contributing to mathematics study.
The Prime Minister also requested scientists both in Vietnam and abroad to have more research on applied mathematics, which is necessary for Vietnam’s economic development. Especially in technology application, boosting productivity, quality and efficiency of the economy, as well as the living standard of the people.
Also at the same day, the Prime Minister had had a meeting with the Institute of Mathematics. At the meeting, the former Head of Institute of Mathematics Prof. Hoang Tuy thanked the Prime Minister for his care for the development of Vietnam’s mathematics. In the context of fierce global competition, if the government do not have policies to facilitate the development of sciences, Vietnam will be left behind in the quest for development.
The Prime Minister agreed with Prof. Hoang Tuy’s recommendations, as sciences and technologies have to be integrated and competed with other countries, especially in the region. As such, it will be a strong motivation for some important aspects, such as mathematics to develop and flourish.
Mr. Phuc also suggested the Institute of Mathematics to research new model of development in the direction of efficiency and integration. With this being said, the research study should be aimed with real world applications, especially for applied mathematics and the development of some aspects in Vietnam.
