Industrial revolution 4.0: Transport sector to be the pioneer
Nguyen Tung 16:42, 2017/11/27
The approaching industrial revolution 4.0 will no doubt affect the Vietnamese economy in general and the transport sector in particular. As such, Vietnam needs to have the right mindset to prepare for this revolution.
According the Ministry of Transport, currently, Vietnam’s transport sector has all the characteristics of the industrial revolution 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. For example, the first industrial revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes with the increasing use of steam power. This had radicallly transformed the transport sector with regard to amount of goods transported and the distance, forming railway networks, national and international sea routes until present.

The second industrial revolution known as technological revolution, which was a phase of rapid industrialization with high productivity, creating airplane, car and high speed train. All of this had created networks of highways, domestic and international flights.

The third industrial revolution is the revolution of automatization and robot, modernizing infrastructure and transport vehicles. The digitalized communication Internet is converging with a digitalized, renewable “Energy Internet” and a digitalized, automated “Transportation and Logistics Internet” to create a super “Internet of Things” infrastructure. As such, step by step developing toward the smart transport. The third revolution has significantly impacted the society, including the transport sector. This sector often manages and utilizes a large amount of resources from the society in every country, as well as to mobilize high number of labor forces. As such, this is a major challenges when the fourth industrial revolution is approaching.

There is a high chance that there will be a first car produced through the 3D printing; as well as 10% of the number of cars in the world to be self-driving. Moreover, the number of working trip or travelling around the world will be done through sharing mechanism instead of using owned cars. Recently, the model of Uber and Grad has shown that internet of things are having significant impact to the Vietnam’s transport sector.

The Vice Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong said: “Vietnam’s transport sector at first has formed a network of highways applying modern technologies with internet connection in providing transport service (booking ticket, check in, automatic fee collection). The appearance of transport models operating in internet platform such as Uber and Grab; providing public services through internet (replacing and renew driving licenses).”

Therefore, the industrial revolution 4.0 can reduce the labor forces through technologies. However, with the current Vietnam’s transport sector, it can have a negative impact on reducing jobs, which can be seen in the struggle of traditional taxis against Uber and Grab. On the other hand, industrial revolution 4.0 which is the complete automatization and the applicaiton of robots, artificial intelligence, internet, digitalized databse and information sharing mechanism. This will have a direct impact to the socio-economic development, with the focus being the transport sector to serve people.

With the growing trend of global connection, Vietnam cannot afford standing still or facing the risk of being left behind. As such, it is necessary to focus on integrated database, sharing information and especially to focus on training high quality human resources.
