Hanoi speeds up progress on wastewater treatment plant

The Hanoi Wastewater Treatment Plant is a key and vital project, as it would collect and purify the wastewater that is discharged in seven districts of Hanoi.

Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Dinh Tien Dung has asked contractors to speed up construction of the Yen Xa sewage treatment plant in the suburban district of Thanh Tri, built with financial support from Japan.

During a tour of the site in late February, Dung stressed that this was a key and vital project as it would collect and treat wastewater from seven districts in Hanoi, particularly from the city's dying To Lich River. "Yen Xa wastewater treatment is expected to also revive the river, which has been heavily polluted for decades," he said.

Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Hanoi's Drainage and Sewerage Project Management Board, said the Yen Xa Wastewater Treatment Plant project, which covers nearly 13.8 hectares, will be able to treat 270,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. The project has a sewage collection system along the To Lich and Lu rivers with a total length of over 52 kilometers.

He added that the construction of a sewerage system for the To Lich River and the main sewer, carried out by the contractor TEKKEN Company (Japan), is 90% complete, while the construction of a wastewater system for the Lu River is only 10% complete, and the construction of a wastewater system for Ha Dong District is 16% complete.

"The project is also a testimony to the good traditional friendship relationship over the past 50 years between Vietnam and Japan," Dung said, stressing that Hanoi must ensure that the rate of urban wastewater treatment reaches 50-55% by 2025. The current rate is only 28.8%.


To remove obstacles and ensure the project's progress, the Party Secretary of Hanoi has asked departments and local authorities to make it easier for investors, contractors, and related units to hand over the site and the license for the underground works.  

Yen Xa is Hanoi's largest wastewater treatment project, costing VND16.3 trillion (US$700 million), 84% of which is the official development assistance (ODA) loans provided by the Japanese Government via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
