Hanoi provides US$3.3 million for typhoon-hit areas

The city's Relief Fund received VND177 billion ($7.2 million) after collecting donations for ten days.

The capital city of Hanoi, itself hit by Typhoon Yagi, has allocated more than VND81.5 billion ($3.3 million) to help northern provinces and cities suffering from the storm's aftermath, according to Nguyen Lan Huong, chairwoman of the Hanoi Fatherland Front Committee.

Of these amounts, Hanoi allocated VND51 billion ($2 million) on September 9 to help 11 northern provinces and cities, and another VND30 billion ($1.3 million) to 12 others on September 19.

Of the VND51 billion in aid, VND5 billion ($203,211) each went to Haiphong, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Lang Son provinces, while VND3 billion ($121,926) each was allocated to Bac Ninh and Vinh Phuc provinces. The aid will focus on the hardest-hit areas to help restore livelihoods and infrastructure after the extreme storm.

The VND30 billion support was provided to 628 students from northern provinces studying in Hanoi whose families were affected by Typhoon Yagi. Among them, 101 students from poor households received VND5 million ($203) each, and 527 students whose families were affected by the storm received VND3 million ($122) each.

Nguyen Lan Huong, chairwoman of the Hanoi Fatherland Front Committee, has called on citizens of the capital to donate money to help the northern provinces.

After only 10 days of the appeal, the relief fund received more than VND177 billion ($7.2 million).

"This is a number that not only show the strength of the spirit of great solidarity and mutual love but also the confidence of Hanoi organizations and people in the Front," Huong said.

Typhoon Yagi has caused severe damage in many northern regions, resulting in loss of life, destruction of homes and crops and damage to roads and other infrastructure. Many areas remain isolated and the people in these affected regions are in urgent need of aid.

The areas most affected by the devastating typhoon and its aftermath are also receiving financial and practical support from other cities in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Fatherland Front has called for donations until October 30. According to the appeal, every public servant, member of the armed forces and worker in the city is encouraged to donate one day's salary. In addition, citizens, religious organizations, agencies, units and businesses are also invited to donate voluntarily according to their capacity and goodwill.

Organizations and individuals at home and abroad donated VND1.7 trillion ($67 million) in cash and bank transfers to the Central Relief Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) as of September 20 to help victims of Typhoon Yagi and subsequent floods and landslides.

In response to an appeal by the VFF, various agencies, businesses, organizations, and individuals have contributed to the relief effort. The Central Relief Committee immediately disbursed two rounds of aid totaling VND1 trillion ($42 million) to 26 affected provinces and cities.

In Lao Cai Province, Le Thu Lua, the Representative of Sunwah Group in Hanoi, presented VND250 million to the province. This funding will be used to build or restore educational facilities in areas severely impacted by natural disasters, aiming to address the aftermath and improve local educational infrastructure.

Ly Van Hai, Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, and Pham Thanh Quang, Director of the Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs, accepted the donation on behalf of the local government and community to help recover from the damage caused by flooding. At the event, Hai expressed deep gratitude for Sunwah Group's support and solidarity with the people of Lao Cai. He also expressed hope that Sunwah Group would continue to send business delegations to Lao Cai to explore environmental conditions and investment opportunities, assuring that the province is committed to providing maximum support for businesses.

In recent years, Sunwah Group has shown particular interest in expanding its investment and economic cooperation in Lao Cai Province. Earlier in 2024, Sunwah signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lao Cai Department of Industry and Trade to develop a smart logistics platform, enhance import-export activities, and attract investments.

As part of this initiative, Sunwah has organized several delegations of businesses from various provinces in China to visit Lao Cai and explore the investment environment and infrastructure development opportunities. The discussions between Sunwah representatives and Lao Cai provincial leaders promise to open up numerous collaboration opportunities in investment and logistics, contributing to the province's economic and social development.
