VTC News quoted Colonel Nguyen Thanh Tin, deputy head of Hai Ba Trung district’s police, as saying that the police are instructing functional units to investigate and clarify the cause of the incident.
An was scheduled to attend a meeting with the National Education Council on the same morning, to be chaired by his superior, Minister Phung Xuan Nha. A day earlier, he co-chaired a national conference in the central city of Da Nang.
An was appointed deputy minister of education in 2018 while he was the rector of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.
In February this year, he assumed the role of secretary of the Party committee of the Ministry of Education, previously held by Minister Nha. He was said to be a potential candidate for the minister post in 2021.
Le Hai An signed Decisions and Notices of recrimination of civil servants who were responsible for fraud of the 2018 National High School Exam in Ha Giang, Son La and Hoa Binh provinces.
Thirteen officers were subject to a disciplinary process due to their involvement in the fraud at the National High School Exam 2018. However, on September 9, 2019, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a document nullifying the aforesaid decisions and notices.
An’s sudden death has led to speculation and conspiracy theories on social media.
