Hanoi marks 20th anniversary of UNESCO recognition of “City for Peace”
The award recognized active contribution of Hanoi for peace, as well as its efforts in becoming a peaceful and also dynamic city, fulfilling its role as Vietnam’s economic, political and cultural center.
Hanoi held a ceremony on July 13 to mark the 20th anniversary of the recognition “City for Peace” awarded by the UNESCO.
Addressing the event, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung reiterated the pride of the city for being honored with the title by UNESCO 20 years ago in La Paz, Bolivia.
Chung said the award recognized active contribution of Hanoi for peace, as well as its efforts in becoming a peaceful and also dynamic city, fulfilling its role as Vietnam’s economic, political and cultural center.
“Hanoi along with five other cities in the world and the sole candidate of the Asia-Pacific was conferred the title “City for Peace”. The event proves to be significant demonstrating strong belief and desire of the Vietnamese people for peace, while enhancing the country’s prestige on the global stage,” Chung said.
This is also considered a source of pride and motivate Hanoi’s people to contribute to the prosperity and development of the capital, Chung added.
According to Chung, after 20 years, Hanoi has become a multi-cultural city with high economic growth rate.
Moreover, the city has been widely recognized as a safe and friendly destination by the world community, Chung continued.
Hanoi puts the citizens at the center of its economic development process, and encourages a better and cultured lifestyle among the people.
Chung stressed the city gives priority to education and nourishing the next generation, considering it a strategy for development. Meanwhile, science and technology is the driving force for Hanoi to achieve sustainable development and build a smart city.
Hanoi’s population is around 8 million, nearly triple that 20 years ago. The city is facing growing challenges from the urbanization process, but remains steadfast on ensuring inclusive growth, Chung stated.
Hanoi has become a center connecting global values, holding cooperation agreements with over 100 capitals and cities from all around the world, Chung said.
“The city has been responsible and active contributor at international events,” Chung added.
Evidently, Hanoi has successfully held major events, with the second North Korea – US summit being the latest, in turn enhancing the prestige of the capital City.
Chung informed Hanoi is currently applying to join UNESCO’s network of creative cities, which is in line with the city’s goal of becoming one of the world’s intellectual and creative destinations.
UNESCO representative Firmin Edouard Matoko expressed his delight of coming back to Vietnam after 20 years.
“We are witnessing an open and dynamic city, which is under the process of integrating in regional and global economies. The city is a reflection of a modern, young, confident, and responsible Vietnam,” Matoko said.
Matoko added Hanoi gathers all the conditions to become a creative hub, and UNESCO would continue to work with the city to not only preserve its historical values, but also to build new cultural ones for a new era.
