Hanoi international seminar on anti corruption measures
By Tuan Minh 09:10, 2014/10/29
An international seminar took place in Hanoi on October 28 discussing the status of anti corruption preventive measures and asset recovery in Vietnam.

The event was jointly organised by the Government Inspectorate of Vietnam, the Ministry of Justice, the British Embassy and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief Government Inspector Tran Duc Luong affirmed the great importance to implementing preventive measures against corruption. Although Vietnam’s legal framework for anti-corruption work is quite comprehensive, the implementation of them has shortcomings, he said.

He stressed the need to boost administrative reform, ensure transparency in operation of agencies and organizations, and increase the role of media agencies.

According to a report on 2014 anti-corruption work presented at the ongoing National Assembly session, around VND1,500 billion was collected for the State budget, fulfilling only 22.3% of total losses caused by corruption cases (nearly VND6,740 billion), especially in the fields of public investment and budget allocation for State-owned enterprises.

British Ambassador to Vietnam Giles Lever highlighted the significance of the seminar and praised the great efforts by the Vietnam government in combating corruption and asset recovery.

However, he said, Vietnam has much work ahead of it to achieve its anti-corruption target. There is no ideal model for anti-corruption work for all nations and organizations, he noted, adding that participants are willing to help Vietnam work out more effective measures against corruption.
