The project, with an estimated cost of VND500-700 billion ($20.6-29 million) would help alleviate congestion and minimize traffic issues upon the opening of the Vinh Tuy Bridge Phase 2.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has directed local authorities to explore the feasibility of constructing an underground tunnel at the Co Linh - entry road to the Vinh Tuy Bridge section.

The project, with an estimated cost of VND500-700 billion ($20.6-29 million) would help alleviate congestion and minimize traffic issues upon the opening of the Vinh Tuy Bridge Phase 2.

The tunnel features a reinforced concrete structure, facilitating travel between Vinh Tuy and Long Bien in both directions, extending approximately 500 meters and boasting a cross-sectional width of around 7.75 meters, equivalent to two lanes for vehicular traffic in each direction.

The city expects the tunnel's design and operational characteristics to align with those of previously operational underground passages such as Le Van Luong, Trung Hoa, and Thanh Xuan.

Following the tunnel's commencement, set to be completed in the 2023-2024 period, the Co Linh – entry road to Vinh Tuy Bridge intersection will evolve into a tripartite crossroads, encompassing an elevated thoroughfare, the existing junction road, and an underpass.

Currently, Hanoi boasts a cumulative count of four operational underground tunnels and one currently under construction. Four of these have been operationalized at significant intersections—Kim Lien, Trung Hoa, Thanh Xuan, and Le Van Luong—while the ongoing construction involves the Giai Phong - Kim Dong intersection tunnel along Ring Road No. 2.5.
