Hanoi a major metropolitan area of the region
14:20, 2014/10/11
After 60 years of national liberation and with many ups and downs, Hanoi has transformed into a major metropolitan area of the region and the world and has been honoured as the city for peace, said Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao.
Mr Thao said Hanoi has witnessed robust growth over the years. Agricultural production value reached nearly VND200 million per hectare, a 1.63 fold increase.

Average income per capita in rural areas reached VND21.36 million per year, up 2.6 fold compared to 2008. Each year, the capital city generates more than 140,000 jobs.

Thao affirmed Hanoi has gradually exerted great influence in the country and become a centre for politics, economics, culture, education, science and technology and international exchange.

The capital city has attained remarkable economic achievements with an annual growth rate increasing on average 1.5 fold and total budget revenue accounting for 20% of the country's total.

The city has effectively resolved social welfare-related issues thus propelling socio-economic development forward.

Thao emphasized the city’s most important task now is planning work and the development of transport system. With a combination of modern and ancient architectures, Hanoi has made remarkable changes to turn it into a more beautiful and prosperous city.

The city will fully tap the underground space to build roads and railways to link the centre to the neighbouring areas.

In recent times, the construction of  many bridges, flyovers and metros in the city and ring roads have helped solved traffic jams in the capital city effectively.

Thao noted being a thousand-year old city, Hanoi is bent on developing an urban area with special identities towards a modern and friendly city. In recent times, many international organisations have regarded Hanoi as a worth-living city and an attractive destination.

The city has been bestowed the honorary title of the “The City for Peace” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Especially, Hanoi has strengthened exchanges, expanded cooperative relations and partnership with more than 100 cities in the world.

In the time ahead, the city will pay heed to resolving social issues, ensuring social order, improving people’s daily lives and generating more steady jobs.

The major focus will be on restructuring the national economy, dealing with environmental pollution, boosting administrative reforms, building transport infrastructure, and urban development.

With a thousand-year history, Hanoi is widely recognised as one of the best cultural destinations in Southeast Asia.
