Free class for disabled children
Hanoitimes 11:37, 2014/03/07
A group of retired teachers in central Quang Ngai province have opened a free class for disabled children in the area.
The class, which began last November, is offering education opportunities for some ten students aged 7-22 who are suffering from different health problems including dumbness, deafness and epilepsy in Son Tinh District's Tinh Tho Commune.

With a desire to help the poor children whose parents cannot afford to send them to schools, the elderly teachers have been coming to their houses to persuade the parents and encourage the children to join the class, where they are taught mathematics, literature, and communication skills.

Teacher Nguyen Duy Thanh, 63, said it is very difficult to teach his students here because some of them are even not aware of their own behaviors.

"Most of the children did not know how to write and read at first," Thanh shared. "Moreover, they are of different ages and have different health problems."

But the elderly teacher also proudly shared that his students are improving a lot. "Many of them can write and do math exercises well now. And what's more, they are all enjoying classes and making new friends."
According to a local man, Pham Dinh Ran whose 12-year-old son is attending the class, he is very happy that his son can continue his study now.

"My son used to attend a public school but then had to quit due to his epilepsy," Ran said. "He is very happy that he can attend this class."
