Truong Duy Nhat, 55, who led the Danang office of the Dai Doan Ket newspaper in 1998-2011, is accused of involving in a high-profile case led by business tycoon Phan Van Anh Vu, aka Vu Nhom.

The former reporter is charged with power abuse to misappropriate assets regulated in the Penal Code.

The arrest is part of a broader investigation into the violations of regulations on the management and use of state assets that lead to losses and wastefulness committed by Vu and his accomplices in the central coastal city of Danang, the Saigontimes reported.

The Thanh Nien newspaper reported that Nhat had allegedly colluded with Vu to buy a state-owned house at Tran Quoc Toan Street, Danang. Currently, this property is part of a villa owned by Vu’s family.

Tran Van Ve, head of the ministry’s Office of the Investigative Police Agency, told a press conference in March that Nhat had allegedly misused the files of the Dai Doan Ket newspaper in 2004 to purchase the state house, which was not put up for auction, resulting in a loss for the state.

In 2014, Nhat was sentenced to two years in jail for abusing the rights to freedom and democracy to infringe upon state interests under the Penal Code.

In mid-2010, Nhat left the newspaper and launched his own blog, “Mot goc nhin khac” (A different perspective), which featured news defaming the Party and state and catching public concerns, according to local media.
