The Vietnamese Ethnic Orchestra will make its debut in Hanoi on December 12, establishing it as the first-ever orchestra in Vietnam grouping of artisans and instrumentalists from different ethnic groups across the country.
The orchestra was launched under the South East Asian Sound (SEA Sound) project, which was initiated by Vietnamese French musician Nguyen Nhat Ly with the aim of delivering and developing indigenous music and traditional musical instruments of Southeast Asian nations.
A 70-minute Vietnamese ethnic music concert will be held at the launching ceremony at the Hanoi Opera House, featuring on the stage exotic sounds and melodies of authentic ethnic instruments such as the jaw harp, leaf flute, Paranung drum, gourd lute, and gongs.
The concert was possible due to the numerous of field trips made by Nguyen Nhat Ly and his co-workers to villages in the northern provinces, as well as five provinces in the Central Highlands region and two south-central coastal provinces of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.
During their trips, the project team examined potential instruments for the orchestra and called for participation of veteran and talented local artisans from ethnic groups of Tay, Thai, Dao, H’Mong, M’Mong, E De and Xo Dang.
Previously, three concerts were held in Hanoi to introduce signature instruments and music of people in the Northwest region, Central Highlander, and Cham people. The concerts have been greatly applauded by researchers, experts, and the audience.
