EVN boosts implementation of nuclear power plant projects

Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has seen implementing component projects in preparation for the building of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plants, the first of their kind in Vietnam.
According to Pham Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project Management Board, EVN is investing in six out of 10 component projects under the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power master project approved by the Government on March 18, 2010.
The management board was established in March 2011 in a bid to boost the implementation of relevant projects.
In January 2013, EVN approved numerous projects on developing synchronous infrastructure for the nuclear power plants.
By late 2014, the projects on supplying water and electricity for Ninh Thuan Power Nuclear Plant 1 had started. They are expected to be complete by December 2016.
Fact-collecting has started for other support facilities, including the centres for the plants’ operation, experts and the 20-hectare project management board headquarters. They are scheduled to be completed between 2016 and 2017.
The Centre for Public Relations sits on 2 hectares. It aims to promote the development of nuclear power in Vietnam and is expected to be finished in 2017 or 2018.
Another main focus has been training those who will manage and run the plants, with each expected to employ 1,100 people.
EVN will continue to cooperate with relevant ministries, sectors and localities to ensure the project remains on schedule. They will also make sure the projects run safely and securely, contributing to energy security and the nation’s socio-economic development.
Ninh Thuan 1 in Vinh Truong village, Thuan Nam district will sprawl over 443.11 hectares of land and 440.57 hectares of sea.
Ninh Thuan 2 in Thai An village, Ninh Hai district will take up 380.91 hectares of land and 337.63 hectares of sea.
Each will be equipped with four 2,000-megawatt turbines installed over two phases.
The first turbine at Ninh Thuan 1 is expected to be connected to the national grid by 2020.
Under the country's energy development plan, by 2030 nuclear plants are expected to provide 15,000-16,000MW of power, representing 10 percent of the total installed capacity in Vietnam.
