Electricity price increased from March 16
The Government has decided to increase the price of electricity by 7.5% from March 16 after a Government meeting held in Hanoi on Thursday. Accordingly, the average power price will rise to VND 1,622.05 per kWh.
The Prime Minister, Deputy PMs, the Ministers of Industry and Trade, Planning and Investment, and Finance agreed on the rise after considering price adjustment options proposed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).
The 7.5 percent increase will help EVN avoid and compensate for losses (about 8 trillion VND or 380.95 million USD at present) from exchange rate disparities in recent years.
The Government believed that it can still achieve the preset GDP growth rate of 6.2% and keep the inflation rate at about 5% this year despite the price increase.
On behalf of Government permanent members, PM Nguyen Tan Dung asked EVN to reduce the power loss rate down to 8% this year from 8.49% in 2014.
