Hanoi walking streets – new hotspot for cultural activities and entertainment
The Hanoi walking street model, which was piloted since September 1, 2016 has created a new space for cultural activities and entertainment for both locals and international visitors to the capital city.
It is reported that the newly-opened pedestrian areas have been welcomed by thousands of people, including local and foreign tourists, who flock to the area to enjoy the walking space and a range of cultural, musical and art performances.
An estimated 3,000-5,000 people visit the pedestrian zones each day during the daytime, the figure increasing to 15,000-20,000 at night. In the first eleven months of 2016, nearly 1.4 million international visitors and Vietnamese expatriates made their stay in Hoan Kiem District, an increase of 13.7 percent from the same period last year.
“Specialties” of the walking streets are the traditional Vietnamese folk games reproduced around Hoan Kiem Lake and in front of the Cam Tu (Self-sacrifice) Monument. A variety of games, such as tug of war, mandarin square capturing, stilt walking and rope skipping, have worked to bring back childhood memories among participants and have become appealing attractions to visitors to the walking space.
According to Director of Tourism Department Do Dinh Hong, the expansion of walking areas will contribute to boosting tourism services in the capital city and create a space for tourists and local citizens to get an insight into Ha Noi, fostering their love for the land and people of Trang An. The innovations are expected to help Ha Noi’s tourism sector reach breakthroughs to become spearhead economic sector, bringing high profits to the Capital.
